How to Perform Umrah Step by Step

A simple, practical guide to the four steps of Umrah — Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i and Halq/Taqsir — written for first-time pilgrims from the UK.

Umrah, sometimes called the “lesser pilgrimage,” can be performed at any time of year. While it is far shorter than Hajj, it carries immense reward — and performing it correctly brings real peace of mind. This guide walks you through each step in order. If anything is unclear, our team and on-ground guides are always available to help.

“And complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah.”Qur’an, Surah Al-Baqarah (2:196)

Before you begin: a quick overview

Umrah consists of four essential acts performed in sequence:

  1. Ihram — entering the sacred state with intention (niyyah) and Talbiyah.
  2. Tawaf — circling the Kaaba seven times.
  3. Sa’i — walking seven times between Safa and Marwah.
  4. Halq or Taqsir — shaving or trimming the hair to exit Ihram.

The steps of Umrah

1

Enter the state of Ihram

Before reaching the Miqat, perform ghusl, wear the Ihram garments (two white sheets for men; modest clothing for women), make your intention for Umrah and begin reciting the Talbiyah.

Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk…
2

Make your intention (Niyyah)

At or before the Miqat, sincerely intend to perform Umrah for the sake of Allah. From this point the restrictions of Ihram apply — see our Ihram guide for the full list.

3

Recite the Talbiyah

Repeat the Talbiyah often as you travel towards Makkah, raising the voice (for men) as a proclamation of your response to Allah’s call.

4

Perform Tawaf

On reaching Masjid al-Haram, begin Tawaf at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad), circling the Kaaba seven times anti-clockwise. Men perform Idtiba and Raml (brisk walking) in the first three circuits where able.

5

Pray two Rak’ah behind Maqam Ibrahim

After completing Tawaf, offer two units of prayer behind the Station of Ibrahim if possible, then drink Zamzam water.

6

Perform Sa’i between Safa and Marwah

Proceed to Safa and walk towards Marwah seven times (Safa to Marwah is one, Marwah to Safa is two, and so on), making dua along the way.

7

Shave or trim the hair (Halq/Taqsir)

Men shave the head completely (Halq) or trim it evenly (Taqsir); women trim a fingertip’s length from their hair. With this, your Umrah is complete and the state of Ihram ends.

Practical tips for your first Umrah

  • Stay hydrated and keep Zamzam water with you — the Mataf can be warm and crowded.
  • Wear comfortable, easily identifiable footwear and use the designated shoe shelves.
  • Keep a small card with your hotel name and address in Arabic.
  • Move with calm and patience — avoid pushing towards the Black Stone if it is crowded; pointing towards it is sufficient.
  • Memorise a few simple duas, but know that you may make dua in your own language too.

FAQs
Common Questions
How long does it take to perform Umrah?+
The rites themselves typically take 2–4 hours depending on crowds. Most pilgrims stay 7–14 nights to perform Umrah, visit Madinah and worship in the Haram.
Can I perform Umrah more than once on one trip?+
Yes. Many pilgrims perform additional Umrah on behalf of deceased relatives by re-entering Ihram from the appropriate Miqat (such as Masjid Aisha in Tan’eem).
Do I need to know Arabic?+
No. The Talbiyah and a few key duas are recited in Arabic, but you may make personal dua in any language. Our guides help with everything on the ground.
What if I make a mistake during Umrah?+
Minor errors are common and often easily corrected; some may require a small expiation (dam). Ask a knowledgeable guide or scholar — our on-ground team can advise.
