The Complete Ihram Guide

How to enter Ihram, where the Miqat is, the intention and Talbiyah, and what is permitted and prohibited while in the sacred state — for both men and women.

Ihram is the sacred state a pilgrim enters before performing Umrah or Hajj. It is both a physical state — marked by specific clothing — and a spiritual one, defined by intention and a set of temporary restrictions. Understanding Ihram beforehand makes the start of your journey calm and confident.

Entering Ihram

Before crossing the Miqat (the appointed boundary), a pilgrim should:

  1. Perform ghusl (a full ritual wash) and, for men, apply unscented grooming beforehand.
  2. Put on the Ihram garments.
  3. Make the niyyah (intention) for Umrah.
  4. Begin reciting the Talbiyah.

Ihram clothing

For men

Two clean, unstitched white sheets: the izar (worn around the waist) and the rida (draped over the upper body). Footwear should leave the ankle bones exposed. The white, seamless garments symbolise purity and the equality of all pilgrims before Allah.

For women

There is no special garment. Women wear ordinary modest clothing that covers the body except the face and hands. The face should not be veiled with a fitted niqab during Ihram, though a loose covering that does not touch the face is permitted in front of non-mahram men.

The Miqat

The Miqat is the boundary at which Ihram must be assumed. Pilgrims flying into Jeddah or Madinah enter Ihram before crossing their Miqat — often on the plane, where the captain usually announces it. Common Mawaqit include Dhul-Hulayfah (for those coming via Madinah), Yalamlam and Qarn al-Manazil.

Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayka la sharika laka Labbayk…The Talbiyah — “Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am.”

Restrictions of Ihram

Prohibited in Ihram

  • Cutting hair or trimming nails
  • Applying perfume or scented products
  • Hunting or harming animals
  • Marriage contracts or intimacy
  • Arguing, swearing or quarrelling
  • For men: stitched clothing & covering the head
  • For women: covering the face with a fitted niqab

Permitted in Ihram

  • Washing and bathing (without scented soap)
  • Wearing glasses, a watch and a belt
  • Sheltering under an umbrella
  • Changing the Ihram sheets if needed
  • Wearing sandals that show the ankles
  • Making dua in any language

Once you complete Umrah and perform Halq or Taqsir, the state of Ihram ends and these restrictions are lifted. For the full sequence, see our step-by-step Umrah guide, and don’t forget your Ihram essentials.

FAQs
Common Questions
Can I wear a belt or carry a bag in Ihram?+
Yes — men may wear a belt or money pouch and carry a bag. The key restriction for men is avoiding stitched, fitted clothing and covering the head.
What if I accidentally break an Ihram restriction?+
If done out of forgetfulness or ignorance, there is usually no penalty for many minor matters; some actions require an expiation (fidyah or dam). Ask a knowledgeable guide — our on-ground team can advise.
When do women enter Ihram?+
Women enter Ihram the same way as men — with ghusl, intention and Talbiyah before the Miqat — but wear ordinary modest clothing rather than the two white sheets.
Can I shower while in Ihram?+
Yes, you may wash and shower, but avoid scented soaps and shampoos while in the state of Ihram.
