Umrah Vaccinations & Health

What UK pilgrims need before travelling — the mandatory meningitis vaccine, recommended jabs, and practical health tips for a safe and comfortable Umrah.

This guide is general information, not medical advice. Always confirm current requirements with your GP, a travel clinic, or the official Saudi authorities before you travel — rules can change.

Mandatory vaccination: Meningitis ACWY

Saudi Arabia requires all Umrah and Hajj pilgrims to have a valid quadrivalent meningococcal (ACWY) vaccine. The certificate must be issued at least 10 days before arrival and is valid for several years (check the validity of your specific vaccine type). Carry the certificate with you — it may be checked on arrival.

Recommended vaccinations

Routine UK Vaccines
Ensure MMR, diphtheria, tetanus and polio are up to date as part of the standard UK schedule.
Seasonal Influenza
Recommended, especially for the elderly and those with health conditions, given large crowds.
Hepatitis A & B
Often recommended for travellers; speak to your travel clinic about your needs.
COVID-19
Requirements have eased, but check the latest Saudi entry rules close to travel.

Health tips for a comfortable Umrah

  • Stay hydrated — carry water and drink Zamzam regularly; the climate and crowds are demanding.
  • Protect against the sun — use unscented sunscreen (scent-free while in Ihram), a sunshade, and avoid the midday heat where possible.
  • Mind your feet — comfortable footwear and a small bag for shoes help prevent blisters and lost sandals.
  • Reduce infection risk — hand sanitiser and a face mask are wise in dense crowds; many pilgrims experience “Hajj/Umrah cough.”
  • Bring your medication — carry enough in original packaging, with a copy of your prescription.
  • Pace yourself — rest between acts of worship, especially if elderly or managing a health condition.

Travelling with health conditions or reduced mobility

Pilgrims with diabetes, heart conditions, or limited mobility can absolutely perform Umrah with the right preparation. Choose a Haram-close hotel to minimise walking, ask us about wheelchair assistance, and consider travelling outside the busiest seasons. Our team is happy to advise on the most comfortable arrangements.

Don’t forget comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical treatment abroad. Once your health prep is sorted, see our packing list and step-by-step Umrah guide.

FAQs
Common Questions
Is the meningitis vaccine compulsory for Umrah?+
Yes — the meningococcal ACWY vaccine is mandatory for all Umrah and Hajj pilgrims. The certificate must be dated at least 10 days before arrival in Saudi Arabia.
Where can I get the meningitis ACWY vaccine in the UK?+
Most GP surgeries and travel clinics, as well as many pharmacies (such as larger Boots and Superdrug travel clinics), offer the ACWY vaccine. Book a few weeks before travel.
Do children need the vaccine too?+
Saudi requirements generally apply to all pilgrims above a certain age — confirm the current minimum age and requirements for infants with your travel clinic.
Is travel insurance required for Umrah?+
It is strongly recommended. Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical treatment abroad protects you against unexpected costs — we can point you in the right direction.
